Today’s big announcement in AI is the merger of Jony Ive’s startup, io, with OpenAI. Note, I’m using the term “merge” here because that’s how OpenAI is describing this transaction. This transaction would normally be considered an acquisition by most observers.
After watching the video, my biggest takeaways are:
- io plans to create a family of AI devices: This suggests there eventually will be various products at different price points, just like there is for the iPad (Mini, Air, Pro) and Macbooks
- Jony gave Sam a prototype to take home and “live with it”: Suggests the device is something you have by your side and interact with on a regular basis throughout your day
- Magic intelligence in the cloud: Nixes the idea of on-device processing
- Sam goes on to describe today’s workflow when using ChatGPT. You need to reach down, grab your laptop, type and explain, press enter, then wait for a response. This suggests a new interface that could be voice or always on knowing context
- Sam says he thinks this technology deserves much better: Implying that the new device will be iterative, not a completely new form factor. Something we are accustomed to using in our lives
- Want everyone to have it: Affordable pricing! Mass market appeal
Given the above, and plans to release the first io device in 2026 (only three years of development) this seems to be a household, personal product at an affordable price point.
My guess is that it will be an ear bud that has voice mode, and possibly, a small camera for environmental awareness.
It’s exciting to see new innovations in consumer hardware especially as the iPhone approaches its 20th birthday.
